Thaumcraft Modpack [Minecraft Java Edition]

Thaumaturgy in Minecraft: The Magic of Miracles

“Thaumaturgy… which giveth certain order to make strange works, of the sense to be perceived and of men greatly to be wondered at.”

Mathematicall Praeface to Euclid’s Elements (1570), John Dee

Thaumaturgy is the ability of a mage to perform miracles. This mod embodies that principle: you draw magical energy—called Essentia—from physical objects and reshape it to work wonders. In practice, Thaumcraft lets you harness arcane power from the world around you to create extraordinary effects.

How to Craft Your First Wand: Iron Capped Wooden Wand

Your first step into Thaumaturgy is crafting a wand. The simplest wand available early on is the Iron Capped Wooden Wand. To create it, combine one stick and two iron nuggets in a crafting grid as shown:

(Recipe: stick in the center, iron nugget above and below).

Obtaining the Thaumonomicon and Community Credits

Place a bookshelf in the world, then right-click it with your wand. Doing so grants you the Thaumonomicon—the mod’s primary guide, which explains nearly everything you need to know about Thaumcraft.

We extend our gratitude to the following translators for their help: Vexatos, jualme, crafteverywhere, Mexahoid, FrancescoDeSa, TheVikingWarrior, Hgmoa, VeryBigBro, avttrue, ferzrrn, RustyXXL, bgh251f2, Egor305, Zaltora, PlatonCraft, XuIIIHuK, Sternes, DancingPeral, GLaDTheresCake, BrunoLG, dmf444, aucunn, tyrope, m9731526.

Mod‑Pack Usage Policy

The code of Thaumcraft for Minecraft, in both source and binary form, is the intellectual property of Azanor. The following conditions apply to any mod pack that includes Thaumcraft:

  1. Your mod pack must contain a link back to the original forum post.
  2. You may not monetize the mod pack in any way.
  3. You must give credit to Azanor as the author and may not claim that you created any part of the mod.
  4. If I ever ask you to remove Thaumcraft from your pack, you must do so immediately.
  5. Handle all bug reports and queries internally within your pack’s support channels. Do not direct users to the main Thaumcraft thread for pack‑specific issues.

If these five conditions are met, you have my permission to include Thaumcraft in your mod pack.

These are mods that use the API or other means to intergrate with or add content to Thaumcraft. More importantly they do so without breaking the balance of my mod (such as it is).

Guidelines for Add‑on Developers and Special Thanks

I truly appreciate all the add‑on mods created for Thaumcraft. To keep the ecosystem healthy, please follow these requests:

  • Do not add excessive new aspects. If you have an idea that seems universally useful, send me a private message—I might add it to vanilla Thaumcraft.
  • Aim to add no more than one research tab.
  • Keep your own researches on your own tab.
  • Do not move my original researches. You may create copies to show dependencies on your tab, but the original research must stay in place.
  • Do not alter any of my recipes. If you believe a change is necessary for balance, contact me first—it may be something that should be incorporated into the base mod.

Some add‑ons bring back items from Thaumcraft 3 or earlier. I have no problem with that, and you are welcome to do so. However, be aware that I plan to reintroduce several of those items myself (much of Thaumcraft 2’s content was never ported to TC3 due to time constraints). If I later implement my own version, please understand that it will be a fresh implementation, not a copy of your code.

If you wish to receive beta versions of Thaumcraft to make update transitions smoother, send me a private message with your Dropbox user info and a link to your mod so I can verify you are an active add‑on developer.

Got Questions?

Is this modpack beginner-friendly?

Yes, but you will need patience. The Thaumonomicon book explains everything step by step.

Can I add other mods to this pack?

It is recommended to keep it pure. Adding extra content may break research balance.
